7 Hillside Renovation

Although the difference between the pictures below may seem small, to see the 7th hole in person you can truly see the impact that removing trees can have on a hole.  About 15 pines were removed from the base of the hill, below the birches, to allow more sunlight to reach the fairway.  The quality of the turf has greatly improved from the fescue on the hillside to the bentgrass on the fairway.

Nursery Expansion

In 2010 our nursery measured approximately 3,500 sq feet, but over the years we have worked on increasing the size as we could.  In 2010 our staff added another 1,000 sq feet of collar height.  In 2012 we more than doubled the size of the nursery and added irrigation to provide proper coverage.  Currently the nursery sits at 10,000 sq. feet and is primarily at greens height with a collar around the perimeter.  With the removal of some nearby trees, we again saw the opportunity to increase the size and function of the nursery.  We are currently working on adding a new section that will be tied into the existing nursery but will be maintained at fairway height.  We anticipate the completed nursery to be a total of 15,000 sq feet, 9,000 will be greens height and 6,000 will be fairway height.  This expansion will allow us to deal with significant sod projects in-house.  The new design will require little added maintenance as the green will become slightly smaller and the fairway height will be setup to be mowed by triplex.

Green & Collar Expansions

The green and collar expansion project is complete.  McDonald & Sons returned to Concord CC for another fall project.  As part of the project we reworked the slope of some of the expanded areas as well as fixed some drainage.  The sod has been installed, fertilized and prepped for winter.  With a little tlc next spring the new expansions will be ready for play early in the 2014 golf season.

The expansions were added on holes 1, 2, 4, 7, 12, 15, and 16.  Not only do the newly expanded areas look great, but golfers will have a range of options when playing a shot around the green.  We are sure that members and guests to the course are going to love it.

The second hole, pictured above and below might be the biggest change seen on the course.

Driving Range Tee & 5 Tee

As part of the expansion project the driving range was also stripped, regraded and resodded.  The tee will open in the beginning of next season.  In the mean time members will be able to tee off from a new mat that has been installed.  The mat is one long continuous mat of a much higher quality than mats of the past.  Also we are happy to announce that the 5th black tee has been expanded and resodded.  The previous tee was undersized before and hopefully now will be better suited to hold up to play.

Irrigation 1 and 10 Fairway

Throughout the year we repaired and installed irrigation.  Many heads and some irrigation lines were moved during the expansion project.  Also several heads were added to the 1st and 10th fairways to provide full coverage to newly expanded fairway areas.  It was quite a bit of work, but when it comes to having proper irrigation coverage there is no cutting corners.

Bunker Renovation

The renovation of the bunkers at Concord CC is underway.  McDonald & Sons, based out of Maryland, are the contractors that will be spearheading the renovation project.  They have over 25 years of experience, in which time they have worked on top courses throughout the country and developed a reputation for excellence.

The renovation will consist of removing existing sand, regrading subsurface, fixing drainage and re-edging each bunker.  A.A. Will high density sand, found at clubs such as Kittasett Club and Charter Oaks CC, will be added when the subsurface and drainage are corrected.  Reshaping and resoding of bunker faces will be done as needed.  Upon completion we are looking forward to having some of the best bunkers in New England for years to come.

7th Fairway Drainage

Due to insufficient drainage; the landing area of the 7th fairway was constantly in poor condition.  In October, we enlarged several drainage basins and re-graded the landing area.

Above the sod is cut; to the left is the removal of the old fairway and excess material.  After removing the turf we were ready to address the drainage.

By enlarging the size of the catch basins, we created more opportunities for the water to leave the fairway more quickly.  Grading became critical in order to move surface water to the basins and avoid pooling on the fairway.

The newly sodded area of fairway remained roped off for the remainder of the season to insure proper rooting.  The sod rooted well and was in great condition by the time the snow fell.  We plan on opening the fairway in the spring.

16th Fairway Drainage

Record rainfall in the Spring along with clogged drainage tile due to willow roots caused the lake on the 16th fairway.

The fairway was heavily damaged do to the excessive water.  After investigating the issue it was determined that replacing the drainage across the fairway was the only solution.

A new 8" drainage line installed across the fairway with several catch basins on either side.  Once final grading of the fairway was complete we were ready to sod.

Here is the staff laying and ctting in the sod.  Within two weeks the fairway was re-opened.
